Back with the RTS mini-game on Unity

Hello everyone. It's me Antony, back with another blog in 2025.

I know I've been absent for a while without a new Blog for a long time. Now that I'm working on the new role as health community agent, my colleagues and I are visiting the families as part of our job to improve the health quality in our community and town. Things are looking good and we're enjoying in our new role.

And, again, new Nightwave chapter is still on. My brother and I are close to reach level 30. As usual.

For this Blog, I'm going to talk about the RTS mini-game that I've been working a long time ago. and show you the print screens / screenshots of it.

Initially, I started it while I used my gaming channel TonyTorius to share its development. When my brother installed Unity for the first time and tried some things, I had the idea of starting a mini-game inspired in Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, StarCraft, WarCraft or any other real-time strategy game.

I know. These videos are in Brazilian Portuguese. Don't mind about it. But in these videos, I made reference to some channels like Guto + Game Dev, GamesIndie, PushyPixels, Metalstache and Paulo We Make a Game; and showing the development and some funny moments - especially in the second video.

Unfortunately, the project came to a halt when there are no videos from Guto to learn except for Fog of War (the last tutorials available in his channel). That means I have to find for alternatives.

Another thing I wanted to point out is: when I started my new YouTube channel, I really wanted to distance myself from my main channel - splitting my content dedicated to 3D works, literary works and Unity to a separate channel while leaving the gaming content related to the main one.

While I plan to upload new Unity content to TonyAnima Projects, I will leave these two videos on the TonyTorius channel

The first images of the mini-game look pretty simple. After watching Guto's tutorials, I made the villagers to collect gold, food and wood from its respective sources; building structures like Town Center, Houses, Lumber Camps, Mining Camps, Mill and Barracks - however there's a minor error when I try selecting the recent built structure and the 'Selected Circle' around it is missing.

The models for the structures and the resources were made in Autodesk 3DS Max while the trees, the villagers and the resource deposits are from Unity itself. The buildings look pretty simple. At the time I didn't have proper skills for 3D modeling and texturing. So you could say I wasn't the best 3D artist compared to nowadays (lol). But it was enough for that time.

The initial idea for the RTS mini-game is creating a fan-story with Dragons: Krystal Wars - with the Drajittar (a fourth faction composed of Ulzikrarun to face the Vorgan, the Norvagen and the Draigar; and with the noble Admiral Ald'Steiden leading the Drajittar in this fight).

However, the idea of this mini-game will have to be shelved in order to avoid some CC issues, although I wonder it won't attract too much interest. Besides, I'll replace some of the models inspired in Dragons for something I've planned for a long time. While I was watching some gameplays from Might & Magic: Heroes VI and having some inspiration from WarCraft 3, Lord of the Rings: Battle for the Middle Earth (although some initial ideas came from this game), Warhammer Fantasy and Dungeons and Dragons, I decided to change it to my fantasy story named as Ardra.

And, to start this change, I'll share you the renders of the Human Town Hall.

I've been working on the Town Hall in Blender these days. I tried to make it without adding too much subdivision via modifiers. The results were promising. The fountain is also looking good.

After modeling the building, I baked the textures and made some adjustments after some challenges met with Bump texture for the roof.

Amazing, right? I did my best to create a town hall inspired by the European style (German, Swiss, Polish or Austrian). Hope you like it.

With the building ready, I exported its model as an FBX file to Unity.

The last addition to the mini-game aside from the town hall and the villagers is the mini-map. Most RTS games have a mini-map to assist locating your forces, buildings, the allies and the enemies, the terrain and the natural resources.

Due to the lack of proper knowledge in programming, I decided to ask some tips with Gemini.

Question: Do I plan to rely on AI for developing my mini-games?
For some things, yes. I know there are other YouTube channels teaching programming and developing mini-games in Unity - some with more content and updated compared to the ones I'm used to. Honestly with the advent of AI for research and assistance like Gemini, ChatGPT and others, some people are adopting them in order to assist for a variety of situations.

Be mindful that: for academic purposes (like writing a term paper), the AI can give you some tips, but DON'T RELY ON IT if you plan to use it to write your term paper. Same thing when it comes to seeking medical attention in case of flu symptoms or any other illness.

Back to the project. I have plans of adding the building-up animation, the training animation and the destruction animation. In addition, I added the villagers to the mini-game. However, they're using the Minecraft-style design since I'm still learning some tips of creating 3D characters. For the time being, I'll use that style for the Humans and other factions (Undead, Orcs, Demons, Elves, Dark Elves, Dwarves, Naga, Argolians and maybe even the Ulzikrarun).

The renders for the villager.

I also made the icons for the Town Hall and the Villager. They are in PNG format with a 256x256 scale.

Pretty cool, right? It would be great seeing these icons being used in the HUD for building / training / displaying information like the HP (hit points), damage, hack armor, piercing armor, speed, resource collected, range and more.

Well, that's it for today. I hope you enjoy it. I'll be back with more Blogs in this year - if nothing change in order to make me occupied like job, studies and civil service exams. I plan to share more artworks and other things I did in my time. Until the time comes, you will be surprised to see it. See you next time.
