New updates for the RTS mini-game on Unity
Hello everyone. It's me Antony, back with a new blog in 2026.
I know I've been absent for a while without a new Blog for a long time. Now that I'm working on the new role as health community agent, my colleagues and I are visiting the families as part of our job to improve the health quality in our community and town. Things are looking good and we're enjoying in our new role.
For this Blog, I'm going to talk about the RTS mini-game that I've been working a long time ago and share you new images. I made some major updates for the RTS mini-game - highlighting the Day and Night Cycles, the HUD displaying the resources, the Pause Menu option and more Icons for new units and buildings.
As you can see, I decided to include a Pause Menu. The idea for this addition is to stop clicking on the Stop Test or Pause Test when I'm running it in Unity. For the time being I have the 'Resume' and 'Quit Game' options. I have the 'Save' and 'Load Game' buttons, but I disabled them since I don't have the means to save a game match nor to load it. I may include it, but that would be for another time, same thing for the 'Option' for adjusting the graphics interface, keybidding and sound.
Initially, I configured the F10 key as a shortcut for the Pause Menu. But, I noticed that the Files option opened when I pressed that key. So instead I changed to F12. Although some games have the Esc key as the shortcut for the Pause, in this mini-game project the Esc keybutton has been set up for cancelling the buildings when I'm going to place it on the ground while having the Villager selected. Still, it is a good start.
In addition to the Pause Menu, I started working on the HUD. It's showing the Gold, Wood, Stone, Crystal and Population. For the time being, the 999,999,999 for the main resources is a placeholder, same thing for the 200 / 200 in the Population section. I need to set up the collected resources to be integrated to the "player's bank" and the food being generated for each Farm and Town Hall (or any other building for the respective faction) that I constructed.
My brother suggested me to adjust the Resource HUD to 1/2 of its height and the Info Card HUD to 2/3. And that I did, which improved a little bit the visibility of the map.
After that, I decided to rework on the Day and Night Cycle.

Unlike the previous version of the Day and Night Cycles where I developed based on GamesIndie's channel where the game scene went in almost total darkness due to the Directional Light's rotation, I added a Sun Color, Fog Effect and Ambient Lighting with colors gradients. The idea is to give a blue color for when it's night, purple when the sun rises, yellow during daytime and orange during nightfall. The transition from one color to another is smooth instead of a sharp one.
I plan to make some adjustments in the future - highlighting the creation of a clock showing the time (in numbers or similar to WarCraft 3).
Another change was the position of the main camera. I placed it a little further away from the game scene; otherwise some people would not enjoy having the camera too close to the game.
Let me show you the icons and the renders for the respective models.
Icons (Humans):
Barracks (updated)
Chaplain
Crossbowman
Priory
Sister
Amazing. Now the Humans are presenting a variety of units and buildings. Let me show you the renders of these new additions.
Barracks:
I concluded the Barracks these days as well the Priory. I still need to finish the Mining Camp's UV Mapping and then make its textures. The Crossbowman, Sister and Chaplain are looking good, even though I had some minor setbacks after importing their 3D models to Unity.
Next Human units in mind to make are the Mage, Knight, Crusader, Battery Ram, Trebuchet or Catapult, Light Elemental and the Celestial.
Now, time to share the icons of the other factions.
Icons (Nekrul / Undead):
Banshee
Ghoul
Graveyard
Necrolite Tower
Necropolis
Obelisk
Skeleton Archer
Vampire
Zombie
Icons (Chaos):
Cultist
Demented
Hellhound
Imp
Portal of Lesser Demons
Succubus
Brute
Javelin Thrower
Laborer
Amazing, huh? I decided to add a variety of units and structures from the new factions I plan to include to the mini-game.

Banshee:
While I was working on the Humans, I decided to make the Vampire and import the zombies from the other mini-game I was working in Unity (the CoD Zombies / L4D mini-game). For the Skeleton, I tried a different model for the skull since the idea is to escape a little bit from Minecraft usual style. Like the Zombie and the Ghoul, part of the mail armor is transparent since I used Alpha masks to hide the unnecessary parts of the arms, legs, body and head. The Banshee is using a mixture of Alpha texture for revealing some of her bones. Even though she's a ghost, I included a nice scary appearance for the Banshee where she's showing her dead appearance, despite the hair.
Graveyard:
The Nekrul buildings look nice, especially the Obelisk with a green crystal and the Necropolis with a cilinder that pulse with souls. For the Graveyard, I included a Zombie and a Skeleton - adjusting their pose for hibernating in their coffins.
Initially, I planned to make the Obelisk as a tower to be upgraded to a Spirit Tower or a Death Tower and the Graveyard would be the supply building for increasing the Population capacity. But I changed it - giving the role of towers to the Necrolite Tower and the Obelisk would act as the Nekrul version of the Human Farm.
Future updates will include shoulder pads and a black cloak for the Vampire, as well the Carrion Beetle (worker), Death Cannon, Gargoyles, Bone Scarab and Spiders.
Cultist:
Demented:
Hellhound:
Imp:
The Hellhound was made in a separate Blender project as I was working on a different idea of making critters. For example: I was working on a wolf / dog where I could change its tail, ears and snout / mouth. The legs could be adjusted by its Bones for different sizes. Then I decided to make an evil version of a dog with Pincher's ears and German Shepherd's tail.
The Succubus received a pair of horns and wings. Funny trivia: I included the Sacrifice Brand (Berserk) on her chest, but I removed it after her latest renders and included her demonic tail - fully rigged, just like the Imp. Future updates will include a fiery whip and the chains with a sharp hook for the Demented as armaments.
Portal of Lesser Demons:
The Portal of Lesser Demons was a bit tricky, but it was an interesting building I made for the mini-game. I used masks for the portal and an Emission texture for creating a nice darker lighting from when the Demons are emerging from that structure.
I may add a secondary worker for the Chaos, which is the Minion - summoned by the Overlords (they will act as a resource drop-out and supply generator); while leaving the Cultist as the main builder (similar to the Fallen Summoner from Armies of Exigo and the Undead Acolyte from WarCraft 3 - although dedicated to collect Gold from Haunted Gold Mines while the Ghoul is dedicated to collect wood from the trees). In addition, other demons to include are the Hell Guard, Juggernaut, Pit Lord and Summoner. Next structures to add are the Desecrated Citadel, Portal of Greater Demons, Sacrificial Pit, Chaos Economic Guild and Halls of Temptations.

Laborer:
The Orcs also have some nice units made, in particular to the Brute, Javelin Thrower and the Laborer. The Javelin Thrower didn't come with tribal tattoos, but I decided to include it after the initial renders. Also, I included the dirt stains on the Laborer's face, arms, torso and legs. And no, I didn't want to choose the name 'Peon' in order to make a copy from WarCraft. Same thing for the Brute. Initial name would be 'Grunt', but it will enter the criteria of "WarCraft's copy". Still, they are looking good.
Next units to add are the Shaman, Witch, Goblin Sling-Shooter, Ogre Mauler, Cyclops and Gladiator. Maybe later I will start making their structures like the Clans Hall, Huts, Warriors Hut, Storage Pit and Gladiator Arena.
I'll also make the other factions like the Álfar (Light Elves), Dökkálfar (Dark Elves), Dwarves and Nazz’hjr (junction of the Naga Empire with the Argolians / Reptilians).
Well, that's it for today. I hope you enjoy it. I'll be back with more Blogs in this year - if nothing change in order to make me occupied like job, studies and civil service exams. I plan to share more artworks and other things I did in my time. Until the time comes, you will be surprised to see it. See you next time.
